Today's review will be about a toner. In fact, this review means a lot to me because this is the very first toner I actually tried. Before that, I never ventured into skincare and cosmetics, and my idea of makeup by then was a lip balm.

Year 2010, and I became fascinated into trying BB creams. It was a hype then and I never knew which brand to try first. The internet led me to Skin79, which is according to most reviewers at the time, has the best line of BB CREAMS. True enough, the BB cream worked like magic, and I had it since then. Eventually, I began to embrace the famed Korean skincare routine as well.

At first, I didn't risk trying out other Korean brands, because I was in love with Skin79. I bought the moisturizer, the mask, the eye cream, and even the toner. It wasn't easy at all, because I had to spend a fortune on my Skin79 skincare routine. A moisturizer costs around Php 700, while the toner is a Php 100 cheaper - probably too much for my student allowance and pay from my part-time jobs.

But, you know what? I could say it was worth it.

I had horrible skin before my biggest experiment. My face was prone to acne, and it's so sensitive that scars left by acne and pimples were so evident on my face. Plus, my skin looked flaky. I don't know what else to say, but my skin's condition then was so terrible.

I could probably attribute the transformation to Skin79, but despite everything, I think I'm ready to part from my favorite toner - the Skin79 Green Tea Mist Toner.

I know that this toner made my skin smoother and acne-free in the past years. It did what it promised:
  • Prevented acne and pimples
  • Gentle
  • Has a cooling effect
  • Made skin smoother and silkier
Its scent is pleasant, too, and it absorbs easily. It's not sticky either.

Plus, it's not a hassle to use at all. Just spray it on your face, and you could proceed to the next skincare step. I never even had problems with the nozzle, everything worked like magic.

But truth be told, I can't afford a toner as expensive as this anymore. A 60ml bottle could last you two months of regular use at most, and each bottle costs roughly Php600 here in the Philippines.

Imagine how many bottles I've emptied (and how much cash spent) just to maintain my skin. This is probably the 5th. But then, like they always say, if there's a beginning there is an end. Tragic as it sounds, but I think this is where my relationship ends with my beloved  Skin79 Green Tea Mist Toner:

You know, I love you still, but time has finally come when we have to part ways.

Scared of ageing and wrinkles?

At age 25, I began to dread them, and for a while, I was desperate. I wanted to prevent them from showing up, unless I reached, say, 40 years old?

I know what you're thinking: I must have gone nuts, being so paranoid on wrinkles. However, at age 25, haven't you felt that a child's play is simply child's play, and you just have to act according to your age?

And at age 25, clearly, you're not 18 or 19 anymore. You're freaking 25, closer to 30! Age will take a toll sooner than you'll expect.

I know ageing is inevitable but I heard you could slow down the process, and age beautifully.

This is the reason why I incorporated anti-wrinkle products in my skincare regimen, which eventually brought me to this:

My photo doesn't give this product any justice. It's way prettier in person!

This was one of Skin79's newest products in 2013. It's obviously packaged in gold and glitters, and believe me, it's prettier in person. It's probably the most luxurious-looking product in my room right now. Packaging is simply foolproof, and I have no problems with it. To add, it's also very pretty.

I, for one, vaguely have an idea what gold does to the skin, but nonetheless, I bought the Skin79 The Premier Gold Capsule Essence. It says that it 'diminishes' signs of ageing through 'gold' tea, which claims to nourish the skin with the effects of gold. I have no idea what gold tea is, and if you do, please just let me know what it is. If there is gold, probably there's a silver tea? Just kidding.

The container isn't the only thing that was given the touch of gold. Take a closer look at the gel; it's sprinkled with 'gold flecks' too!

Formulation

Despite its extra luxurious look, the formula is nothing fancy. Its consistency is similar to that of a typical essence - gel-like in texture and has no grains whatsoever. Seriously, once you apply this on your skin, you wouldn't even feel the presence of the gold flecks. Also, they seem to magically disappear once in contact with the skin.

When applied, it doesn't stretch your skin, nor 'firms' it. It's a mysterious gel, because you'd barely notice it there. I guess it sounds just about right - because essences are supposed to be light to the skin. Also, it's a plus that I've never had any problems with breakouts etc. while using this product. I could tell that it works great on sensitive skin, such as mine!

Effectiveness

Despite its luxurious looks, its price and its promises, it appears that this particular gel doesn't diminish signs of ageing. I have used this for over a couple of months and I had gone halfway the container, but the fine lines along my forehead are still there. They probably looked even worse now than they did months before I began adding this to my skincare routine! I guess this product is not for me.

Rating:

Packaging - 5.00 out of 5.00
Formulation - 4.00 out of 5.00
Effectiveness - 1.00 out of 5.00

Overall - 3.33 out of 5.00

Pros:

  • Very pretty packaging
  • Doesn't spill
  • No tightening effect
  • Subtle powdery scent
  • Light on the skin
  • Doesn't cause breakouts
Cons:
  • 'Wrinkle-improvement' doesn't work
  • Expensive at $58 each
  • Not locally available

Repurchase?

The numbers speak for themselves. Sorry, but I'm not repurchasing.

That's all for today's review!

See you!

Love lots,

Review: Skin79 The Premier Gold Capsule Essence

Tuesday, January 7, 2014

I love bath products, and I would love them even more if they’re from my favorite Korean brands. So, if you’ve been following my blog for quite some time now, you would notice that I just love Skin79! This time, I’ll review on Skin79 Special Set, which consists of Peeling Gel, Body Wash and Facial Cleanser.

I bought this particular set online at Php 860.00, which is pretty expensive for three different products in ‘mini’ 30-ml tubes. I bought it anyway, hoping to find something good for my skin. After all, it’s the only Skin79 product which has a body wash in it, and I needed a good ‘travel set’.

A body wash, a peeling gel, and a facial cleanser in one set sounds good enough.

If you’re familiar with Skin79, you will notice that it doesn’t carry brands other than makeup and facial care products. Well, this particular set is an exception. This is the only Skin79 body wash, why would I skip this opportunity?

Let’s start with Skin79’s body wash, shall we?

Skin79 Special Set: Moisture Body Wash

Apologies if I can’t supply you with photos of this product. I already ran out of it, like ages ago.
Based on what I remember, the body wash lathers well; better than most body washes in the market, but I believe it’s not the best there is. Its texture is close to typical Korean facial cleansing foams; think of Missha and Apieu.

I also found out that it is extremely moisturizing and mild to the skin. It also gives your skin a luxurious feel to it.

Yes, the tube is tiny. As a matter of fact, I only used it for about three times. Yeah, that’s the sad part. (Explains why I don’t have an actual photo of it). So, I couldn’t say much about this stuff only that it’s moisturizing. Not much.

Skin79 Special Clear Set: Gentle Peeling Gel

The first peeling gel I’ve ever used was the Skin79 Crystal Peeling Gel, which promises to remove the impurities and dead skin cells from your face after every use. I loved it and used it weekly for a little more than a year. I think it significantly reduced my acne. I also think that it made my skin clearer and brighter.

Skin79 Crystal Peeling Gel

The Peeling Gel, which was included in the Skin79 Special Set, is very similar to the Skin79 Crystal Peeling Gel. Truth be told, I think this is the Crystal Peeling Gel in a different packaging, but unfortunately, I have nothing to compare it with. I mean, I ran out of Crystal Peeling Gel years ago. However, just like the Crystal Peeling Gel, I love it so much and it’s is so effective in improving the appearance of my face. Also, I think a little of this product could go a long way as well.

Honestly, I was very happy to have this in my ‘Travel Kit’.

Skin79 Special Clear Set: Creamy Foam Cleansing

I haven’t tried any cleansers from Skin79, because normally, they could cost twice as much as those other Korean cleansers. However, thanks to the Special Set, I was able to try one. I must say that I’m pretty impressed with this cleanser. Just like the body wash, it’s moisturizing and mild to the skin. Honestly, I feel like I’m a notch prettier whenever I use this. Most of all, I think it prevents acne as well. I’ve been using this for months now. Meaning, a 30-ml tube such as this could go a long way as well.

Way to go Skin79!

My Verdict

Overall, I think this is a good product, only that it’s a bit pricey. I think I should rate it a 4.00 out of 5.00.

I wish the ‘set’ would just come in pairs – one tube for peeling gel and one tube for cleansing foam. I’d hate to say it, but the body wash was a waste of packaging. I mean, one tube for about 3-5 uses only, then the tube goes to the trash bin. I think each tube delivers what it promises, though. Nonetheless, I hope Skin79 would release a full-sized body wash. I’ll definitely buy it!

Have you tried this particular set before, too? How was it?

Please share your experiences in the comment section.

Thank you and have a great day!

Love,

NEWBEE

Review: Skin79 Special Clear Set (Moisture Body Wash, Creamy Foam Cleansing, and Gentle Peeling Gel)

Hello everyone!

Stock photo

Today, I’ll be reviewing about Skin79’s Lemon Brightening Mask in 75 ml. I decided to give this one a rating sooner than every other product I listed, because I guess this will be the first among the products in my list to run out. I think a couple of uses more, and I’m all out of a brightening mask. So, here are the snapshots on what the actual product looks like.

So, here's an up-close shot.
Sorry, a bit messy. Just used some of it earlier today.

The box, the lid, and the jar. Forgive me for the messy photos.

The spoon, and the yellowish substance
Notice the packaging; its design is somewhat mature and formal. The yellowish product (the mask pack) is placed inside a jar, which is made of some sort of fiber glass. The jar is kind of heavy, and I think the jar, would somehow break, if anything happens to it. It comes with a small ‘spoon’, which I think is the best beauty ‘spoon’ I’ve ever had. I think I’ll be using this ‘spoon’ frequently until it breaks. The original packaging came with a box; I still have it, but it got a few dents due to shipping and handling. Honestly, I would have preferred the product to come with a tube for easy dispensing, and for more hygienic purposes as well. On second thought, maybe the thick yellowish liquid HAS to be preserved in a fiberglass kind of jar? Maybe, just maybe. Moving on….

I’ve had this one since October 12, 2013 and I’ve been using it once, or twice a week at most. As you could see, I have a little of the product left. In my estimate, I guess a jar would be enough for a little more than 20 uses, and it depends on the frequency and the coverage. So, I think one jar could have you covered a little more than two months. I got this jar at about Php 740. That’s about Php 30 per use. Pricey, but hey! It’s still cheaper than facial sheet masks (around Php 50 each) and more definitely spa facial services (around Php 200) or more.

First, let me tell you what facial masks are for. Facial masks are supposedly beneficial for the skin. Most facial masks I’ve seen are targeted towards specific skin issues, like acne-prone skin, dull skin, dry skin, and so on. Most people would go to a spa to pay for a good and relaxing facial. Some are trying to find some solutions to their skin troubles. I’ve tried a spa facial a lot of times before, and I personally think that spa facials are good, only that they are really pricey. For instance, the cheapest one I’ve had was worth Php 200 five years ago, and if I recalled correctly, the esthetician used a sheet mask for my face. However, not all spas resort to sheet masks, some also use mask packs.

Mask packs, like the Skin79 Lemon Brightening Mask, can be considered great alternatives to spa facials. They can be used at the comfort of anyone’s home. There are also mask sheets available for home use; I’ve had a lot of it as well, and most of them are good. So while there are some masks that are for everyday use, there are also masks that can only be used two times per week at most. The Skin79 Lemon Brightening Mask is the latter. However, I never tried using it more than two times, and I’m not really sure what it could do for your skin if you happen to use it more than a couple of times.

As soon as I had the mask, I became so excited to try it on. So, of course, instead of trying it on right away, I had to cleanse and tone my face first, which I did. That is, to remove the impurities first so that the nutrients and other ingredients could easily penetrate the skin. So, here are closer snapshots on how the product would actually look on your skin:

Scooped some using the 'spoon'

My arm prior to application

Initial application of the product using the spoon

Showing you the coverage of the  same product I scooped earlier

First impressions? I felt rather disappointed at first. A few seconds after I spread out the thick yellowish substance on my face, my skin started to feel a stinging sensation, which is a bit annoying to me. I could only speculate that the product touched pores that were previously inhabited by acne. So, if that’s the case, I would NOT recommend this to anyone who has/had troubled skin. I could only speculate that products like this (ones with lemon mostly), could only make your skin more TROUBLESOME.

Since the description suggested putting the mask on for at least ten minutes, I complied. The mask stung for a while, and then the sensation slowly disappeared. As a matter of fact, the mask then felt like a cold gel, which is very relaxing for my part.

The Skin79 Lemon Brightening Mask is a wash-off type of mask. So after ten to fifteen minutes of putting it on, you are recommended to wash it off using lukewarm water. Honestly, I hate it when it’s about time to wash it off. I mean, the cooling and relaxing part ends here, and worst of all, the thick mask is a bit stubborn to take off. In my case, I had to wash it thoroughly, which is a rather tedious thing to do, and by the way, things could go a little messy.

Results? The hard work did pay off. After I washed it off, I felt that my skin has become smoother and silkier; my face looked brighter as well.

Will I repurchase? Maybe. As of now, I feel like I still have a lot of masks to try on; so most likely, I would end up with another one as soon as I run out of it. This product is great, but I think it’s not enough to reach Holy Grail Status.

Rating? I think it’s a 4.00 out of 5.00.

PACKAGING – Packaging is okay; it would have been great if the product came with a lighter jar. Would have been great if the jar wouldn’t break, too. However, I fell in love with the spoon.

EFFICIENCY – Initial product price is pricey and it only takes a while to consume all of it, and the results are somewhat satisfactory;

EFFECTIVENESS – It is indeed effective; the brightening mask lives up to its name;

FRAGRANCE – The fragrance is somewhat citrusy, but some other times, it reminds me of a ‘cheap’ car freshener. So, if you’re not in a healthy mood, you may not like this.

OTHERS – It stung, even for skin with very minimal acne and pimples, like mine. It’s somewhat difficult to wash off.

I guess the review ends here. If you have questions, please post them on the comment section below.

Also, please let me know if there’s a mask that you’d like to recommend.

Thanks and have a nice day ahead!

Love,

NEWBEE

Review: Skin79 Lemon Brightening Mask

Tuesday, November 26, 2013

Hello everyone!

Sorry for the late post this week. As promised in my last post, I’ll be reviewing some (hopefully, all) of the beauty products I have used (have been using) in the past months. So this time, let me start with an eye cream from Skin79’s The Oriental Line:

Skin79 The Oriental Double Perfection Eye Healer in 15 ml)

Skin79 is a Korean brand, manufactured by Wizcoz. So, unlike The Face Shop, Etude House, and Skinfood, it hasn’t paved its way to the Philippines yet; though a lot of small entrepreneurs have been selling some if its products online and even on small beauty bazaars. Skin79 is famous for its exquisite line of BB Creams – one of which is even renowned worldwide as the Queen of BB Creams – the Skin79 Super Plus Hot Pink Beblesh Balm (I also have this, but I’ll post a review of it some other time).

A word of caution though, imitators are catching up to the popularity of these items, and they imitate one Skin79 product after the other. I’ve even seen fake Skin79 products sold in malls. So be cautious! Who knows what kind of things they could put on fake products. So, if you’re seeing Skin79 products sold at a price that is too good to be true, stay away; it might be fake.

I am a great fan of Skin79 and just because I could hardly find its products here in the Philippines, I hoard a lot of them every time I purchase some stuff from South Korea. If you’ve seen my last post, you could tell that around 80% of the skincare products I own are actually Skin79 items, including my Double Perfection Eye Healer.

So let me start with the review:

What is The Oriental Double Perfection Eye Healer?

As stated in the packaging:

Description in Korean

Short description about the product and the directions

Long list of ingredients

I have been using this thing since the 21st of October 2013; I guess I now have the ‘right’ to give this product a verdict. I bought this at approximately Php 600 to Php 650 (some even retail at around Php 1200 each!), which is rather pricey to begin with. Nonetheless, I believe we’re still on the hunt for effective products at reasonable price. I’ll show you later how I’m going to convince you if it’s really pricey in my standards.

Take a good look at the overall design of the product. Don’t you find it rather expensive-looking and a bit high-end? In my honest opinion, I find Skin79 items, especially those that are in The Oriental line, have really very attractive packaging. The Gold box, and the gold (everything) is just too irresistible for somebody like me. I knew I had to own at least one, and I did. As a matter of fact, I think I have 4 Orientals in my personal collection, including this baby.

Don’t be fooled, though. In the photos, this healer looks rather high-end, but it’s somewhat lightweight. Initially, I thought it would be heavier, because of its packaging, but unfortunately, it’s not. On second thought, it might not be so unfortunate at all, because I could easily take this even on a vacation, so not so much worries about that!

Here’s a snapshot of what the product looks like after you take the cap off:

Notice that it’s somewhat tapered, and it looks more like a pen. It’s supposed to help you with the application of the gel to your eyes.

Here’s what the gel looks like, after you pump it out of its container:

Each pump dispenses pea-sized gel, which is in my opinion, enough to cover some areas around the eye. So, based on experience, I think a little goes a long way.

"Before, During and After" photos of my hand:

Before application

During application

After product has been applied

The gel, when applied to the eyes, is somewhat cool. Possibly comparable to freshly cut cucumbers, if you know what I mean. However, you could only feel the sensation for a short period of time, then, the cooling sensation is gone. It doesn’t sting, but in my opinion, a bit sticky when it starts to dry off. However, it shouldn't be a problem if you’re applying it before going to sleep.

I normally put this on before going to bed. The next day, I always find the product dried up, but the extra moisture has been unmistakably locked into the skin around my eyes. I never used it during daytime though, because I often use BB cream (sometimes, with foundation) to deal with the inconsistencies and flaws in my skin; I couldn’t imagine wearing such a slow-drying gel, when I’m meeting up with my clients.

Eye creams are a must in Korean Skincare, but I find this product impractical to use during daytime. I prefer my other eye cream for this. J

Then again, this baby promises to help you with your dark eye circles. I’ve been using this for over a month now, and I think I’m quite satisfied with what it delivers. I’ve had really dark eye circles before I began using this, but now, they’re still there but not as dark as I had before. Maybe, there are a lot of factors involved, including hours and hours of lack of sleep, but I won’t dwell deeper on that one. The bottom-line is: the dark circles around my eyes seem lighter than before.

Would I purchase it? Maybe. I think that it’s more on the expensive side, and the effects would take a long time before you could finally see them. I’m satisfied, but I’m still on the hunt for the best eye cream for my skin. I think I just have to finish the whole bottle up and move on to the next. And by the way, I would like to show you how this cream is rather pricey for my standards. Let me show you a computation I learned way back in grade school:

I think 15ml is quite a lot. I have an Etude Eye Cream (in 5ml), which I have used up for a little more than 2 months. So, I guess, 15ml should give us 6 months of everyday use, give and take.

Compute for duration in days: 6 months x 20 days = 120 days
I only use this during weekdays, once a day

Compute price per use:
Purchase price divided by the duration (in days)
Php 650.00 divided by 120 days = Php 5.50

This means that at Php 5.50 per use, you could only expect your eyebags to be moisturized, and lighten just a little bit. However, I’ve seen quite a number of eye creams sold at a cheaper price (Php 3.00 and below per use) and I would say, do the same effects this baby does.

Overall rating? I think it’s a 3 out of 5. It’s not at all bad, and not too good either, just somewhere in between. It’s not at all too special, but not harmful either. I think I could simply proceed with my skin care routine without this.

I hope you find this useful!

Please let me know on what you think about this.

Love,

NEWBEE
